Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Wheaton on Senior Day

KENOSHA, Wis. — In the regular-season home finale, the Carthage women's volleyball team swept Wheaton (Ill.) at home 3-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action Wednesday night.

It was a back-and-forth first set as the score was locked at 12. Carthage (19-9, 6-1 CCIW) then scored seven unanswered points sparked by a kill from Haley Horner and three-straight Thunder attack errors. After Wheaton (Ill.) (13-10, 5-2 CCIW) made it 19-16, back-to-back kills from Nicole Acton and Molly Skoda put the home team up five. A late push for the Thunder shrank the deficit to two however, Liv Carel and Leena Ajibola gave Carthage the set with a block 25-20.

It was all Carthage in the second as the home team went out in front 10-4 with a kill from Carel. The Firebirds ended the set with a 15-2 run to win 25-6.

With the third tied at eight, another 9-2 run for Carthage put them up seven with an ace from Aubree Bucheger. The visitors got it to six off an attack error but the Firebirds took the set 25-13, ending with an 8-2 run.

Carthage returns to the court on Wednesday, October 27 facing Illinois Wesleyan on the road starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"I just love how we are coming together as a team at the right time. Wheaton is an outstanding team and for us to beat them in three really says a lot. I think our blocks got to them. We had one of our better blocking nights with 10 in three sets, that's a lot. Just credit to our players, they were just amazing tonight. The bench, the crowd, it was very exciting. I thought our seniors were outstanding. Haley Horner and Nicole Acton were terrific, Megan Dawrant played wonderfully in the back row. The girls are hoping to play here again. We have a tough match coming up against Illinois Wesleyan but we have put ourselves in the right position to play here again."
