Firebirds Suffer Road Sweep at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — To start the week of competition, the Carthage College women's volleyball team fell to Illinois Wesleyan in straight sets in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action Wednesday night at the Shirk Center.

The Titans (17-12, 7-1 CCIW) started with a five-point margin in the first off an ace and a block. A kill from Leena Ajibola made it 15-9 but the home team outscored the Firebirds (19-10, 6-2 CCIW) 7-4 to go up 22-13. Though another kill from Ajibola made it 24-18, Illinois Wesleyan took the first set 25-18.

In the second, Carthage responded, going up 12-7 with a kill from Liv Carel and an ace from Molly Skoda. Later, a Titans attack error extended the lead to 16-11 but the home team rallied scoring nine unanswered points flipping the score to 20-16. Illinois Wesleyan used the momentum to win the second 25-19.

After the Titans held a 14-8 lead in the third, the Firebirds put together a 10-3 run to go up 18-17 with a kill from Kaitie Rohe. Neither team could gain the advantage as a kill from Haley Horner tied it at 24. Following another kill from Horner and a Carthage block by Ajibola and Rohe, the Titans scored three straight points to win the game 28-26.

Carthage hits the road for the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Triangular on Saturday, October 30. The Firebirds begin the day playing Wisconsin-La Crosse at noon before concluding with No. 24 Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Well, we didn't get the outcome we were hoping for but we showed some great fight in the third set. Some of it was on us not controlling the ball well in the first two sets and credit to IWU for putting tough service pressure on us. We will regroup and get ready for the weekend and the CCIW tournament."
