Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Firebirds Post Two Five-Set Victories

KENOSHA, Wis. — Hosting the Carthage College Triangular at Tarble Arena, the Carthage women's volleyball team defeated North Park 3-2 before concluding the triangular with a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday.

North Park (14-8) controlled an 11-5 margin to start the first set of game one. In the set, four straight points for Carthage (18-9) cut the lead to 20-16 off a Liv Carel kill. Though the Firebirds got within five, the Vikings won the set 25-19.

After the score was locked at seven early, North Park used a quick 5-1 run to make it 12-8 however Carthage responded tying it at 13 with a visitors attack error. Kaitie Rohe put the home team up one as the Firebirds outscored the Vikings 9-3 for a 25-18 set win.

Three consecutive North Park attack errors gave Carthage a 10-3 advantage in the third. After the Vikings got it to six, six straight points for the Firebirds sparked by kills from Rohe and Haley Horner extended the lead to 12 as the home team went on to win the set 25-15.

With North Park up 17-13 in the fourth, Carthage battled back, shrinking the deficit to one with a kill from Allyson Milligan and a Vikings attack error. Another kill from Rohe and a visitor's attack error tied it at 23 but back-to-back kills for North Park forced a fifth set 26-24.

Milligan added another kill tying the fifth at six. With the match locked at 10, a four-point swing for the Firebirds put them ahead with two kills from Horner, an ace from Molly Skoda, and a Vikings bad set. Although North Park made a late push getting within one, Carthage won it with a final kill from Horner 15-13.

In the second contest of the day, it was a back-and-forth set one to begin as Wisconsin-Oshkosh (14-10) controlled a one-point lead. A pair of kills from Carel and Kasey Pfister followed by an ace from Horner changed the score to 16-14. The Titans kept close with the home team drawing even at 20. After a kill from Horner and a Titans attack error put the home team up 25-24, Wisconsin-Oshkosh tied it at 27 however, a service error and a kill from Milligan gave Carthage the set 29-27.

Neither team could gain momentum in the second as the visitors held a slim 10-9 margin before stringing together an 11-4 run extending the lead to 21-13. Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the set 25-16.

In the third, the Titans continued the momentum holding a five-point margin early. Carthage responded with a 14-4 run highlighted by three consecutive kills from Milligan, Horner, and Skoda. Though the visitors got it to three, Carthage ended the set outscoring Wisconsin-Oshkosh 4-1 for their second set win.

The Titans controlled a 10-7 advantage with an ace in the fourth as the visitors used a 12-7 run to go up eight and would force a fifth set 25-15.

Carthage came out with an 8-2 lead sparked by three straight Titan errors. Another attack error by the visitors extended the Firebirds lead to 10-6. Later, Nicole Acton hit a shot that put Carthage up three before back-to-back kills from Horner gave the home team the win 15-12.

Next up, the Firebirds stay at home facing Wheaton (Ill.) on Wednesday, October 20 starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"It's not surprising we went five sets in both games, North Park and Oshkosh are two good teams. In both matches we started out playing really well then kinda lost our drive in the middle but we found a way to win at the end. I thought we did some good things early on and we were very aggressive. We're learning to stay consistent and making great plays when we need them. We have a big match against Wheaton on Wednesday and we will be rested and ready. The team is gaining a lot of confidence and we're coming together at the right time. Senior night will be big and hopefully we have a good crowd."
