NAPERVILLE, Ill. — In their third match since Sunday, the Carthage College women's volleyball team picked up their fifth-straight victory against North Central (Ill.) in the second Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) match of the week Wednesday night.

After North Central (6-7, 2-3 CCIW) started with a 6-2 lead to start the game, Carthage (16-9, 5-1 CCIW) got within three with a kill from Nicole Acton at 13-10. Later, Haley Horner connected on a kill shrinking the deficit to 21-17. An ace from Molly Skoda and a kill from Leena Abjibola made it 23-20 but the home team collected the final two points to take the set 25-23.

A Cardinals attack error put Carthage up 7-4 in the second; however, North Central tied it at eight. The home team then controlled a 14-11 advantage with a block. An Acton kill got the Firebirds within three as the visitors later got it to two but North Central took the second 25-22.

An ace from Horner and an attack error for the home team put Carthage ahead 9-5 in the third. Back-to-back kills from Allyson Milligan and Skoda gave the Firebirds a 15-8 score. The visitors then ended the set with a 10-4 run for the set victory 25-12.

In the fourth, Carthage continued the momentum with a 7-2 advantage with a kill from Kaitie Rohe. Later, Jenna Millen connected on a kill putting the Firebirds up 22-14 as the visitors forced a fifth set 25-16.

After the fifth was tied at eight, the Cardinals took the lead with a kill and a Firebirds attack error. The visitors finished off the game with a 7-3 run to win it 15-11.

The Firebirds are at home on Saturday, October 16, and will host the Carthage College Triangular. Carthage plays North Park in the first match before finishing the night playing Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"What an exciting CCIW match. North Central is a very good team and their defense was really strong in the first two sets. It says a lot about our team getting the reverse sweep. It was a battle. It was a great team win!! So many players stepped up. Kathryn Shuty, Allyson Milligan, Kaitie Rohe, and Jenna Barrette gave us a spark off the bench in set three and the rest of the match. Jenna Millen was SO good tonight. Her service runs were a big reason we turned things around. She is one tough player. Haley Horner was a big hitter for us tonight!!!"
