Game Recap: #22 Men's Basketball |

Carthage Beats Millikin in Season Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team defeated Millikin 83-57 to start the season in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action Saturday at Tarble Arena.

The score was tied at 10 early in the first half until Carthage (1-0, 1-0 CCIW) used a 27-6 run to jump out 37-16 with 4:29 left. The Big Blue (0-1, 0-1 CCIW) made a small run to close out the half shrinking the deficit to 47-26 heading into the intermission break.

A layup from TJ Best at the 15:10 mark of the second half pushed the Carthage lead back to 19. Millikin cut the margin to 12 with a layup with 8:10 left until a pair of free throws from Fillip Bulatovic and a three-point shot from Josh Washburn flipped the score to 64-50. Another 14-4 run for Carthage made it 78-54 with a three-pointer from Garrett Horner and two free throws from Washburn. Carthage cruised to an 83-57 victory.

Carthage travels to face Millikin on Monday, January 25, with a 6 p.m. tip.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

"Super excited with the effort the guys showed today. We played a complete 40 minutes and they really executed on both ends of the floor. This is a very close team that practices hard every day and that makes my job that much easier. We spaced the floor nicely today and were able to knock down some open looks.

Fillip Bulatovic did a great job facilitating and reading Millikin's defense. They made it difficult on him all day and he made all the correct reads in the second half. Sean Johnson was spectacular on the defensive end like usual. He's a rim protector that makes everyone else's job way easier. Big time lifts off the bench from Josh Washburn and Garrett Horner. They are both extremely confident offensive players who can space and shoot it!

Monday's game will be a tough one. A four-hour bus ride down to Millikin with only one day off, but we will be happy to get back on the floor!"
