Strong Second Half Lifts Lady Reds Over Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. — The Carthage College women's basketball team scored 21 points in both the third and fourth quarters Saturday night, guiding them over Millikin 58-49 at the Griswold Center.

After the home team took an early 7-0 lead, the Lady Reds (10-11, 5-7 CCIW) would end the first quarter on a 12-0 run, sparked by a pair of free throws from Kelsey Coshun and eight-straight points from Maggie Berigan. Carthage would hold the Big Blue (13-8, 6-6 CCIW) to 17 first-half points, but trail by one as they head to the locker room for halftime.

Three pointers by Autumn Kalis and Sammie Woodward would get the Lady Reds going in the third period, giving them a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. While Millikin would get within two points at the 6:45 mark, a layup by Berigan to close out the quarter gave Carthage a 37-29 advantage headed into the final 10 minutes of play.

Once again, the senior duo of Kalis and Woodward would begin the quarter with makes from beyond the arc, pushing the Lady Reds out in front by 10. After Kalis' third three-pointer with just over four minutes left gave Carthage a game-high 12-point lead, the Lady Reds would eventually claim the win by a final score of 58-49.

Up next for Carthage is a 7 p.m. contest at conference-leading North Park on Wednesday, February 12.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"I preached to the kids this week that this game would be all about physicality and energy, and we matched them today. We've got good shooters, but we just couldn't get anything to fall at first. Millikin's defense is so aggressive to the ball, but when we got the ball and skipped it to the other side, we got Autumn and Sammie one. You just need to find them, and we were able to execute better in the second half. Autumn was really good, she hit some clutch shots to get us going in the third quarter. We got a huge lift from Maggie Berigan as well, she did a great job."
