Defense Leads Carthage Over North Central 70-45

KENOSHA, Wis. — After holding their opponent to single-digit scoring performances in both the second and third quarters, the Carthage College women's basketball team defeated North Central 70-45 Wednesday night at Tarble Arena.

While the visitors opened up with a 7-0 run to begin play, the Lady Reds (9-11, 4-7 CCIW) would get on the board with a free throw from Taylor Jozefowicz and jumper from Sammie Woodward. Following a three pointer from North Central (9-11, 5-6 CCIW) to go up by seven, Carthage would make it a two-point game at 10-8 with just over a minute remaining. A three from Woodward at the buzzer would set the scoreboard at 15-13 in favor of the road team.

The Lady Reds exploded in the second quarter, beginning the period with a 16-0 run. Buckets from beyond the arc by Destiny Antoine and Woodward gave Carthage a commanding lead, with a layup from Maggie Berigan putting Carthage up by 10 with 6:50 on the clock. A trio of three pointers from the Cardinals at the end of the half made it a 31-24 game at the midway break.

Yet another run to begin the third quarter from the Lady Reds pushed their lead further, as free throws from Kelsey Coshun capitalized a 10-0 stretch. Carthage would sink a pair of threes to close out the period, as Nansy Velev and Ayanna Ester helped end a 20-3 third quarter, making it a 51-27 game.

The home team held their lead through the final 10 minutes of play, as they went on to win by 25 with the scoreboard at 70-45 in favor of the Lady Reds.

Up next, Carthage will travel to Millikin for a 5 p.m. game on Saturday, February 8

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We talked about it before the game, we were close with Wheaton twice in two really good games, but in our game at North Central we had a hard time getting a chance. Tonight, we started a little slow offensively but once we moved the ball you saw a lot of good contributions from a lot of people in the second quarter. We gave them less contested shots tonight and made them work. We guarded the inside of the arc as well and they tried to create plays by crashing in, but we stood our ground and got rewarded for our effort defensively. Nansy did a great job taking the ball out of Sammie's hands and scored some points. Destiny had nine and Ayanna was great out there. I thought Kelsey did a nice job, she got some strong defensive rebounds in the third quarter, and Maggie went to work and had a good game at the end."

Quick Facts

  • Sophomore Nansy Velev scored a career-best 10 points tonight, while adding a block and three steals on the defensive end.
  • Freshman Ayanna Ester connected on her first three-pointer of her collegiate career and chipped in seven points in the second half.
  • Sammie Woodward led Carthage tonight with 21 points, her seventh game of the season surpassing the 20-point mark.
  • The senior moved up to seventh in the school record books for career three-point shots made, now with 141.
