Gibson Scores Five in Lady Reds Victory over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS — The Carthage College women's lacrosse team defeated Augsburg 13-11 for their first victory of the 2020 season Sunday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

The Lady Reds (1-1) took a quick 3-0 lead, with goals by Jessie Gibson, Margaux Giacotto and Elizabeth Oda to begin the game. The Auggies (0-1) would score three unanswered to tie it at three. Gibson recorded her second goal of the game but Augsburg retaliated with a goal of their own to knot it at four. Each team would add another goal to tie it at five with 9:32 remaining in the half. Gibson found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game to control a 6-5 margin but two goals for the Auggies saw the score move to 7-6 heading into the halftime break.

Augsburg began the half with a score, to make it a two-point game. The Lady Reds scored two unanswered goals from Maddie Berni and Rachel Harris to tie the game until the Auggies responded with two-straight goals to go up 10-8. Minutes later, goals from Elena Herman and Hanna Holloway saw the score go to 10 apiece. At the 11:42 mark, a goal put the home team in control of the game 11-10. Carthage responded as Berni tallied her second goal of the game which tied it at 11 with 6:16 left. Two minutes later, Gibson found the back of the net to put the Lady Reds up 12-11, with Carthage adding one more from Giacotto two minutes later before the final horn as the Lady Reds took the victory 13-11.

Carthage returns to action on Tuesday, February 25 taking on Benedictine (Ill.) in the season's home opener starting at 6 p.m.

Head Coach Lauren Hein

"It feels good leaving this road trip 1-1. We have a big week to prepare for by breaking down film and getting ready for two games. It wasn't the prettiest win, but at the end of the day it is a plus on our record. I look forward to seeing how our team grows individually and as a whole this season. We have so much potential and once we find the spark it'll be hard to stop us!"
