Lady Reds Drop Season Opener with Hamline 10-8

MINNEAPOLIS — The Carthage College women's lacrosse team took to the road to open their 2020 season, falling 10-8 at Hamline on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.

The Lady Reds (0-1) took a quick 2-0 lead, with goals by Maddie Berni and Margaux Giacotto to begin the game. However, the Pipers (1-0) would score four unanswered to finish out the first half, taking a 4-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Once again, Carthage began the half with a score, as Hanna Holloway found the back of the net to make it a one point game. After each team traded goals, the home team would go out in front 7-4 with just under 16 minutes remaining in the contest. Moments later, Giacotto would find Nicole Bowman for the goal before Hamline added three more to their total.

Goals from Jessie Gibson and Bowman made it a 10-7 game with just over seven minutes left on the clock, with the Lady Reds adding one more from Gibson with just over two minutes before the final horn. The comeback attempt would fall short however, as Carthage would eventually fall 10-8.

The Lady Reds will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Augsburg University at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 23.

Quick Facts

  • Entering this season with the eighth-most points in program history, Jessie Gibson added three more to that total today with a hat trick.
