Carthage Takes Down DePauw 13-9 at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — Playing in their 2020 home-opener at Art Keller Field, the Carthage College men's lacrosse team defeated DePauw 13-9 Saturday afternoon.

While the visitors claimed the first two goals of the contest, the Red Men (3-0) responded with a score by Colin Poitras just under five minutes into play. The Tigers (0-2) would go up by a score of 3-1 moments later, but Noah Lindner found Poitras for his second goal of the contest before scoring one of his own to tie the match. Carthage would add two more to their total before the end of the first quarter, taking a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Freshman William Clemens would score off of one of Michael Stell's four assists of the game to extend the home team lead early in the period. However, DePauw would get within one on a pair of goals before the halftime break, setting the score at 6-5.

The Red Men added two quick goals to begin the second half, as the duo of Poitras and Lindner continued to find the back of the net. Each team would trade goals through the third period, with Poitras scoring his fifth of the match to make it 10-7 headed into the final 15-minute frame.

Once again, the Tigers got within one after a pair of quick goals to begin the fourth quarter, before Lindner and Stell sealed the Carthage victory on a trio of goals to give the Red Men 13.

The Carthage men's lacrosse team will take their undefeated record on the road next, when they travel to Lake Barrington, Ill. for a noon game with Hanover on Friday, February 28.

Head Coach David Neff

"It was a tough home opener. DePauw just played a top-20 team in Rhodes College and it was a close one, so we knew we had our work cut out for us, but they hit us pretty hard to start and caught us off guard. We didn't have our best day clearing and could have been a little better at finishing, but the guys found a way to win again. I need to find a way to get more players contributing on both sides of the field, and get our offense playing together. We have a couple of starters beat up and are hopeful that their injuries aren't serious. It's good to be off to a 3-0 start, but there is more here to get better at."
