Lady Reds Fall in Thriller with Elmhurst

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a game that came down to the final seconds, the Carthage College women's basketball team came up short against Elmhurst on Wednesday 75-73 in Tarble Arena.

After winning the tipoff, Amanda Larson found an open Maggie Berigan in the paint to put Carthage (11-13, 6-9 CCIW) on the board first. The two teams would reach a 4-4 tie with just over six minutes on the clock, before the Bluejays (10-15, 5-11 CCIW) stepped out in front, eventually going up 16-11 by the end of the quarter.

It was a high-scoring second period in which each team scored over 20 points, beginning with a three from Elmhurst to which Autumn Kalis responded with one of her own. A trio of scores from Berigan with a layup from Lauren Herrmann got the Lady Reds within four, 26-22 with 6:50 left in the half, before the visitors pushed their lead to 11, 44-33, at the buzzer.

Carthage came out strong in the second half, with a three by Sammie Woodward kicking off a 12-0 run that would put the Lady Reds in front 45-44 midway through the quarter. While a jumper from Woodward with a minute left in the period gave the home team a five-point advantage, Elmhurst would tie it at 58 headed into the final 10 minutes of play.

The two teams traded the lead to begin the final frame, with a three from Herrmann making it a 65-64 game in favor of Carthage at the eight-minute mark. After Elmhurst took the lead with just over three minutes left, Kelsey Coshun sunk a layup to regain the lead at 69-68 on the next possession. While a floater from Berigan in the paint gave the Lady Reds a 73-72 lead with 30 seconds remaining, the visitors would sink a pair of final free throws before eventually winning in the final moments.

Carthage will play in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, February 22, when they host Illinois Wesleyan at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
