Carthage Drops Season Finale to Illinois Wesleyan

KENOSHA, Wis. — Playing in their final game of the 2020 season, the Carthage College women's basketball team fell to Illinois Wesleyan 70-62 Saturday night in Tarble Arena.

The Lady Reds (11-14, 6-10 CCIW) would take an early 5-3 lead after Lauren Herrmann converted an and-one opportunity, followed by Autumn Kalis' first points of the night on a jumper. While a pair of free throws from Sammie Woodward made it 11-7 with just over two minutes left in the period, the two teams would enter the second quarter tied at 11.

Kalis opened the second frame with one of her six makes from beyond the arc on the night, before a three from Amanda Larson minutes later put Carthage up 19-13. However, the Titans (17-8, 11-5 CCIW) would take a one-point lead with just under four minutes left, eventually entering the locker rooms with a 27-22 advantage on the Lady Reds at halftime.

After Larson opened the second half scoring up with a three to make it a three-point game, Illinois Wesleyan began to push their lead, going up by as much as 11 with just under four minutes on the clock. Carthage battled back however, with a bucket from beyond the arc by Kalis and three-point play the hard way from Woodward making it a four-point game. However, it was the visitors that held a nine-point lead as the two teams began the fourth quarter.

The conference foes battled it out through the final 10 minute period, trading scores before a layup by Kalis made it a 59-58 game with just over four minutes remaining. Carthage would continue to hold just behind the Titans as the clock neared zero, but it was the visitors that held the lead as time expired.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"It was an interesting game, we played very hard but had a couple of runs where we gave away a few possessions. When we got in front of people and guarded them, I thought we were pretty good, but there were numerous chances where we could have done some things better. Autumn had a really good performance. She had an injury a few weeks ago, but tonight, she looked like herself. All of the kids played really hard, but Autumn knocked down some great shots. When you look at it, coming from behind, extra possessions seem much bigger. When your opponents get offensive rebounds it feels bigger since we were a couple of baskets behind. It turned out to be a heck of a game, but we were just weren't on the right side of it.
