Augustana’s Hot Shooting Takes Down Carthage

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage College women's basketball team fell to Augustana on Saturday night 64-53 at the Roy J. Carver Center.

The home team opened up on a 13-0 run before Sammie Woodward knocked down back-to-back threes to get the Lady Reds (11-12, 6-8 CCIW) on the board. The senior guard would connect once again from beyond the arc, before Maggie Berigan converted a pair of free throws to give Carthage 13 points compared to 21 for Augustana (12-12, 7-8 CCIW) at the end of the first quarter.

Woodward would hit a fourth three-pointer to open the second period, and convert an ensuing free throw to quickly get the Lady Reds within four. With just under three minutes remaining in the half, a layup from Woodward made it 26-24 in favor of the Vikings, before Autumn Kalis connected from beyond the arc to get Carthage within one minutes later. The two teams would trade layups to close out the half, making it a 30-29 game at the break in favor of the home team.

A score down low from Kelsey Coshun would put the Lady Reds in front to begin the third period, before Augustana opened up a 12-0 run. The Vikings would ride their run to a nine-point lead by the end of the quarter, 44-35. Carthage was able to get within one point early in the final frame on yet another make from three by Woodward, 46-45, before a pair of free throws from the Franksville, Wis. native tied it at 49 moments later. However, the hot shooting from Augustana would close out the contest, and eventually lead to a final of 64-53 in favor of the home team.

The Lady Reds will return home next week for their final two games of the regular season, beginning with a contest against Elmhurst on Wednesday, February 19 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We took some hits all night tonight. Augustana's offensive pace was great, and we were a step behind them. They had enough people that could shoot and we couldn't get help on everyone defensively. We had one stretch in the second quarter where we were moving well, but you can't make a living on tough shots, and we didn't do much to help each other out. Maggie has been playing really well the past two to three weeks, and it's really exciting to see her finish up her college career this well. Lauren Herrmann grabbed 10 rebounds and impacted the game in a different way, she worked hard defensively. We've proved we can beat anybody in our league, and we just need to get the win on Wednesday and see where it falls from there."

Quick Facts

  • Autumn Kalis connected on three makes from deep tonight, giving her 61 on the season, and is now just the second student-athlete in program history with multiple seasons of 60 or more three pointers.
  • Her 61 threes rank as the sixth-most in a season at Carthage.
  • The senior now has 403 career made field goals at Carthage, which ties her for 14th on the program's all-time leader board.
  • Sinking five shots from three tonight, Sammie Woodward set a new career-high for threes in a single season, now with 56 after collecting 52 last year.
