Red Men Open 2020 Schedule With 16-4 Road Win

CONWAY, Ark. — After making the long trip south, the Carthage College men's lacrosse team picked up a victory in their first match of the new season, as they defeated Hendrix College 16-4 on Saturday at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.

The Red Men (1-0) would claim the opening faceoff, with Noah Lindner scoring the first goal of the year moments later. The junior captain would add a second goal to his name with only four minutes off the clock, before Ryan Foley scored his first of his collegiate career to make it 3-0. Keeping a majority of the possession in their offensive half, Carthage would take a 6-0 advantage into the second period, after Lindner found Max Schwartz seconds before the clock expired.

Hendrix (0-1) would make an offensive push to begin the second period, but come up empty on a strong defensive effort from the Red Men and keeper Kyle Guthrie. Lindner and fellow junior Colin Poitras would combine for five more goals before halftime, giving Carthage an 11-0 lead at the break.

While the home team would get on the board with a pair of goals to begin the second half, Lindner responded once more to make it 12-2. Following another score from the home team, the duo of Lindner and Poitras would net two more, setting the score at 14-3 entering the final 15 minutes of play.

In a back-and-forth final quarter, the Red Men broke through first on another goal by Foley, before Joe Poremba scored his first of the new campaign. Carthage would go on to take their first win of the season by a final score of 16-4

The Red Men will take some time off before heading to Michigan to face Alma College on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m.

Head Coach David Neff

"I was really proud of our guys. We had five days to prepare against a team that's been outside for two weeks, and I thought we came out well. We had a lot of freshmen step up in their first college game and contribute. The goalies all played well and we excelled on good coaching from our two assistants. They managed the game really well with personnel changes and calls. I need to do a better job of keeping our guys and myself focused for sixty minutes and not letting emotions feed the team in the wrong direction. I am happy to kick off the season with a win but we need to get better before Alma."
