Lady Reds Drop Home Matchup with Wheaton College

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team fell in a close contest with Wheaton College 68-57 Saturday night in Tarble Arena.

Getting her fourth start of the season, Lauren Herrmann got things started for the Lady Reds (8-10, 3-6 CCIW) with a drive and score on the game's first possession. Wheaton (13-5, 6-3 CCIW) would respond with a run to eventually go out in front 21-13 after the first quarter.

Carthage came out on fire to begin the second period, as Amanda Larson found Sammie Woodward for three to get things started. After a jumper from Herrmann, Larson sunk a pair of free throws to get the home team within one point on a 7-0 run. After the Thunder answered back with a three, Kelsey Coshun connected on two-straight buckets to tie the game at 24 with five minutes left in the half. A three from Woodward gave the Lady Reds the lead, with scores from Nansy Velev and Coshun giving Carthage a 34-26 lead at the break after a 21-5 quarter.

The two teams would trade baskets to begin the second half, reaching a 40-40 draw on a layup from Coshun with just under three minutes on the clock. After a run from the visitors, Larson hit at the buzzer to set the board at 49-44 after three quarters in favor of Wheaton. The Thunder would hold their lead through the remainder of the final period however, eventually defeating the Lady Reds 68-57.

Up next for Carthage is a road contest at Carroll University on Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"For as good as our kids were in the third quarter at 21-5, we made it hard on them and guarded them really well. We had people out there that were new to playing a lot of minutes with us, and they had a tough time getting themselves into spots to make shots. But I thought Nansy played some great minutes. Now we have to get ready to head to Carroll for a big road game."
