Lady Reds Edged Out by North Park

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team dropped a 66-59 contest with North Park on Wednesday night in Tarble Arena.

Carthage (8-9, 3-5 CCIW) was first on the board, as Autumn Kalis found Sammie Woodward at the top of the arc for a three-point basket. Woodward would add two more with a floater before sinking another three from the corner to put the Lady Reds out in front 8-2 with just under seven minutes left in quarter number one. While North Park (14-3, 7-1 CCIW) battled back to make it 10-9, a three from Lauren Herrmann and jump shot by Woodward would help the Lady Reds take a 17-13 advantage into the second period.

After Kalis opened the quarter with a steal and score, the visitors would climb back and eventually take the lead 29-23. Over the final four minutes, Carthage held the Vikings scoreless and inched back, trailing 29-27 at the halftime break.

North Park would begin the second half with a run to take a double-digit lead midway through the quarter, eventually heading into the final frame in front 53-40. While Kalis would begin the fourth period with a three pointer, the Lady Reds were unable to overcome their deficit, falling by seven, 66-59.

Carthage remains at home and hosts Wheaton on Saturday, January 25 at 5 p.m. next.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We're struggling to find consistent offense right now. When we execute, we get pretty good shots, but right now we're having a hard time doing that. We ran our plays, but not with conviction. We got bumped off course and pushed out of position. On defense, we tried some different schemes and I think our zone kept them off the free throw line well. We'll have to reorganize and get ready for Wheaton on Saturday, they're playing pretty well but we played them in a really close game at their arena earlier this season."

Quick Facts

  • Sammie Woodward led the Lady Reds with 23 points tonight, her fifth game of the season with 20 or more.
  • Kelsey Coshun narrowly missed a double-double tonight, scoring 10 points while grabbing eight boards.
  • With a pair of three-pointers tonight, Autumn Kalis has made 53 on the season, the 14th-most in a single season in program history.
