Carthage Falls to Millikin 66-59

KENOSHA, Wis. — Capping off a three-game week, the Carthage College women's basketball team dropped a contest at home with Millikin 66-59 Saturday evening at Tarble Arena.

A strong drive and layup by Autumn Kalis put the Lady Reds (8-8, 3-4 CCIW) on the board first, before Millikin (11-5, 4-3 CCIW) responded with a three-pointer. A score from Kelsey Coshun would give Carthage the lead 4-3, before the visitors reclaimed it with just over four minutes left in the quarter as they went up 11-10. However, it would be the Lady Reds who took the lead after the first 10 minutes of play, 18-16.

After opening the quarter with free throws by Coshun and Destiny Antoine, Lauren Herrmann sunk a three pointer to put Carthage up 25-18. While the Big Blue would attempt to overtake the Lady Reds, Sammie Woodward found Coshun down low for a layup, before the senior guard connected from beyond the arc to close the half, putting the home team up 40-33.

Carthage would hold the lead for most of the third period, claiming a 47-39 lead after a three by Antoine with just over five minutes left on the clock. Millikin would respond however, tying the game at 47 before the two teams entered the final frame in a 49-49 tie.

The visitors would sink a three to begin the quarter and take the lead. While the Lady Reds attempted a comeback, they were unable to sneak past Millikin, eventually falling 66-59 in just their second loss at home on the season.

Carthage remains at home in their next contest, hosting North Park next Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"Millikin did a good job defensively. They got their offense going late, and we held them to four free throws in the first half, but they finished with 22. They out-rebounded us as well, it ends up being a cumulative thing and you end up having to work much more on the defensive end. We just couldn't get anything going on the offensive end, we got some good lucks but just couldn't get anything to fall. Their kids played better, and they played better when they needed them to. I thought we could scare them out of their game a little bit, but it turns out they just wore us down with their defense, and we couldn't find enough points."
