Lady Reds Begin Pointers Invitational With Pair of Sweeps

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- The nineteenth-ranked Carthage College women's volleyball team turned in a pair of stellar performances Friday evening at the Pointers Invitational, defeating Concordia and Lakeland 3-0 at Berg Gymnasium.

After surrendering the first point of the first set against Concordia (2-4), the Lady Reds (6-1) reclaimed the lead, which they would hold for a majority of the frame. It wouldn't be easy however, after a 21-21 draw Carthage came out on top 25-23. The Falcons put up a fight yet again in the second, as they jumped out to a 13-5 advantage. The Lady Reds clawed their way back, claiming seven-straight to eventually make it 17-all. Once again, Carthage came out on top of a tight 25-23 set to go up 2-0.

In the final set of the match, the two teams traded leads once again, with Carthage sealing the 3-0 match victory on a 25-22 third-set win.

The second match of the day would be just as tough, as Carthage took set won 25-22 after overcoming a 10-0 run by Lakeland (3-4). Set two was yet another back-and-forth battle in which the Lady Reds triumphed once again 25-22. The final set of the evening for Carthage proved just as difficult as their previous five on the day, but would seal their second victory of the tournament with a 25-20 win.

The Lady Reds will play in their third and final match of the tournament tomorrow morning, facing Bethel at 10 a.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Today we pulled out two good wins. We were not sharp as a unit and had to keep grinding out each point, but we played two teams with some heart and talent and they pushed us in every set. Shannon Kebisek came through with some quality kills and digs and helped keep us energized. Nicole Action and Andrea Kozak are hitting a good percentage out of the middle. We will have to be sharp to beat a very good Bethel team tomorrow."
