Carthage Holds on for 1-0 Win Over St. Norbert

KENOSHA, Wis. -- A first-half goal from the Red Men proved to be the difference in a competitive match, as the Carthage College men's soccer team defeated St. Norbert College 1-0 Wednesday night at Art Keller Field.

It was a back-and-forth contest, however the Red Men (4-5) found the back of the net early, as Matteo Costa scored in just the ninth minute of play. The lone goal of the night would give Carthage the edge over St. Norbert (5-2-1), who came close to finding an equalizer if not for the play of Red Men defense and keeper Niko Mavrogiannis.

Carthage will now turn their attention to conference play, as they take on their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent this Saturday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Carroll.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"We played average today but grinded one out. I'm happy we got a result while resting some folks today heading into conference play, but their All-American was, and would still have been, a handful. Our keepers have been a huge factor this year and today was no different."

"I did like several of our scoring opportunities even though they didn't yield shots. Matteo's goal from freddy and Ivan was exactly as scripted. Keep in mind we lost to St. Norbert the last two games we played, but today was way more back-and-forth and physical. They could win their league again."

Quick Facts

  • Freshman Matteo Costa scored his second goal of the season tonight.
  • Goalkeeper Niko Mavrogiannis was stellar, posting four saves en route to his second shutout of the season and 14th of his career.
  • Ivan Esquivel registered his third assist on the season and now has nine points this year, the same mark he hit as both a freshman and sophomore.
  • Senior Freddy Martinez dished out his second assist of the season on Costa's goal tonight.
