Trio of Second-Half Goals Lift Red Men Over Hope

KENOSHA, Wis. -- After entering the halftime break in a 1-1 draw, the Carthage College men's soccer team added three scores in the second period to defeat Hope College 4-2 Saturday night at Art Keller Field.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net to begin tonight's contest, until Jerry Patino drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick in the 36th minute. The senior converted the opportunity to give the Red Men (3-5) the advantage, before Hope (5-3) scored an equalizer just minutes later. The two teams would enter the locker room at the half in a one to one stalemate.

Just 10 minutes into the second period, Carthage was able to retake the lead on a score form Alberto Kovacevic, before Patino netted his second of the match nearly five minutes later. While the visitors would respond with a score to make it a one-goal contest in the 66th minute, senior Ivan Esquivel found the back of the net in the 78th to put the Red Men up 4-2, a score that would hold for the remainder of the match.

Carthage remains at home this week and hosts St. Norbert College on Wednesday, September 25 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"In three decades of coaching here I have never seen anything like this match. Hope has a methodical way of playing, and for stretches they worked the top of the box like we usually do. The slick surface was tricky for us, but they won that battle clearly in the first 25 minutes. We were fortunate to score one against the grain and be in it."

"The second half was where the fireworks happened. Making some tactical adjustments at the half helped, but Nick Messineo's effort on the second goal changed the culture of the match, and Alberto Kovacevic coming on and giving us much needed energy gave us another gear."

"Once again both goalkeepers stole the show, I'm glad Lekki is on our team. We played the number one team in the region and number nine in the country, and the number four team back-to-back this weekend and went one and one, and really had chances to get both. This was essentially the NCAA regional from a year ago. It wasn't pretty but we have been on the other end of games like this ourselves. We have another top team in the North Region coming Wednesday and we will have to get back to work."
