Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | By Mike Swartz, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications

Carthage Falls 2-0 to Calvin College

KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped a tough match with Calvin College 2-0 Saturday night at Art Keller Field.

The Red Men (2-5) had two shots just miss their intended target in the first 10 minutes of play before the Knights (7-1) scored in the 25th after a corner. Despite a few great runs, the home team was unable to find an equalizer on shots from Freddy Martinez and Leo Mendoza, as Carthage entered the half down 1-0.

The game turned into a battle in the second period, with neither team conceding a score until just over 10 minutes remained, when the visitors would make it a 2-0 game.

The Red Men will look to bounce back against a tough Hope College team tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Because of the schedule we keep there is always a possibility we could get backed up behind some uncontrollables, like a little stretch last year and right now this year."

"Tonight was a great college soccer game, and credit to Calvin for capitalizing on our mistakes and really going at the guys just not ready to play at this level everyday. We are getting great experience at the expense of winning but I feel good about them."

"This may be the best 2-5 team I have had, and assuming we get our backline straight we will be a really tough beat. Guys competed hard today, but it would have been nice to get something for the effort. Both goalkeepers were the stars of the game, and I felt we owned a big chunk of the field. It doesn't get easier, Hope is one of the region's best."

Quick Facts

  • After adding two tonight, Freddy Martinez has five shots on goal in Carthage's seven games so far this season.
  • The Red Men have been able to take 10 or more shots in four of their last five matches.
