St. Paul, Minn. -- The Carthage College men's soccer team suffered a non-conference road loss to Macalester 2-0 Sunday at Macalester Stadium.
The Scots (2-2-3) jumped on the board early, scoring just four minutes into the match. Each team's defenses would hold steady for the remainder of the half, with Macalester holding a 1-0 advantage at the intermission.
A penalty kick in the 58th minute doubled the Scots lead to 2-0. The Red Men had scoring opportunities to try and shrink the deficit but were unable to find the back of the net. Macalester won the match 2-0.Â
The Red Men (2-4) return home to host the Battle on the Border Tournament taking on Calvin College on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.Â
"We almost found a way to put a period on the end of this trip, but ultimately ran into an organized team on the road without the services of many experienced players again."
"Despite the loss, we battled the entire day. Danny Eloyza, Ivan Esquivel, and Niko Mavrogiannis had special days. I think if we don't concede an unearned goal in the first 5 minutes and if they played a match the day before, we might have been fine. They have a great method of countering and finding spaces behind defenders on pure effort and direct balls. That's the piece that I wish we could have controlled today that they won."
"Some individual pieces are starting to heat up, so if we get a few players back we should have a chance to run. This year's Battle on the Border features essentially the NCAA regional from last year. It's some of America's best so our tournament once should be challenging."
