Women’s Volleyball Goes 4-0 at Southwestern Fall Invitational

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Carthage College women's volleyball team started day two of the Southwestern Fall Invitational with 3-0 victories over Whittier and Southwestern Saturday at the Robertson Center.

In the opening game the Lady Reds (4-0) fell behind early 4-1, before taking control of the set with an 11-8 lead. Carthage would only let Whittier (0-3) get as close as 24-22 before a kill from Haley Horner ended the set in favor of the Lady Reds, 25-22. Carthage and Whittier battled back-and-forth in the second set with the score tied at 11, the Lady Reds managed to find all the right spots at the net and on the floor, taking the second set 25-19. Carthage jumped out on Whittier 7-0 to begin the third set and went on to win 25-14 for the third straight three-set sweep. 

In the final match of the trip, Carthage returned to the court to face tournament host Southwestern (2-1). It was a close first set to start with the Lady Reds holding a slim 7-5 advantage. Carthage gained momentum taking a commanding 19-9 lead and winning the set 25-18. 

In set two, the Pirates jumped out to make the score 6-3 however, Carthage battled back to tie the set at 10. The Lady Reds would again not surrender the lead taking the second set 25-19. 

Carthage continued the momentum in the third set taking control of the game at 15-13. The Pirates got as close as 24-22 until a kill from Megan Behrendt sealed the 25-22 victory.  

Carthage next travels to Whitewater, Wis. to take on Wisconsin-Whitewater on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.

"It was a good weekend for the Lady Reds. We did a lot of good things! Our seniors were outstanding and set the tone for the weekend. Ellie LeCount is so tough and ran a great offense."
 
"Megan Behrendt, Shannon Kebisek and Laura de Rosales passed very well and played some tough defense. Haley Horner and Nicole Acton had some timely kills and big blocks. We're off to a good start with top level competition waiting for us next week."

Quick Facts

  • The Lady Reds have now won 12 straight sets to start the season.
  • Ellie LeCount dished out a total of 78 assists between both games. 
  • Megan Behrendt continued to be an offensive force posting 30 kills on 67 attacks between today's matches only allowing four errors on the day. 
  • Shannon Kebisek added 10 kills off 23 attacks in game two for a .348 attack percentage. 
  • LeCount was named Tournament MVP while Behrendt and Haley Horner were named to the All-Tournament team.
