Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | By Mike Swartz, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications

Women’s Volleyball Begins New Season With Pair of Sweeps

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Carthage College women's volleyball team got off to a hot start to begin their 2019 season, picking up a 3-0 victory over Whitworth in the morning, and a 3-0 win over Hardin-Simmons in the evening on Friday at the Southwestern Fall Invitational.

In game one the Lady Reds (2-0) trailed early 5-2, before surging back by claiming 12 of the next 13 points to take a 14-6 lead. After taking the first set by a score of 25-17, Carthage jumped on Whitworth (1-1) 7-0 to begin the second set and would eventually win 25-11 to go up two sets to none. While the Pirates would lead by seven, 9-2, to begin the third set, the Lady Reds fought back to even the score at 14. After reclaiming the lead on the next point, Carthage would hold on for the 25-18 win to begin the 2019 season with a three-set sweep.

Following an afternoon break, Carthage returned to the court for a match with Hardinn-Simmons (0-2). It was a tight contest to start, with five ties early in the first set as the scoreboard reached 11-all. The Lady Reds would grab the lead on the following point however, and hold it until the end to take a one set lead after a 25-16 win.

While the second frame opened with a four-to-four draw, Carthage would climb away once more, pushing their lead to as much as 12 and take the second set 25-15. Set number three was all Carthage, as the Lady Reds won it 25-14 to seal their second 3-0 sweep of the day.

The team will return to action tomorrow with two more matches at the Southwestern Fall Invitational, beginning with a 10 a.m. game against Whittier before taking on the host Southwestern at 12:15 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"It was a good opening day for the Lady Reds. I thought our serving and passing really set up our defense and offense. We limited our hitting errors and got kills from all positions. Ellie LeCount did a very good job in both matches mixing up the offense. She is such a tough competitor and floor leader."

"Megan Behrendt was outstanding all day! Haley Horner is such a strong addition hitting, blocking and serving, and Shannon Kebisek passed great today and played some strong defense. It was just two good team wins today. Tomorrow's matches are back to back against two strong opponents."
