Lima Sets Single-Season Caused Turnover Record in 13-9 Loss to Cardinals

NAPERVILLE, ILL.—The Carthage College women's lacrosse team ended their 10-game road stand to begin 2019 with a Wednesday-night bout at North Central College's Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The Lady Reds showed promise in all facets of the game, but couldn't muster a lead in a 13-9 loss to the Cardinals.

Record-setting performances kept rolling in for the Lady Reds as junior Emily Lima's five caused turnovers gives her a single-season school record of 39 after Wednesday. This upped Lima's own school record of 36 achieved in 2018. Lima commanded a Carthage defense that notched 14 caused turnovers in the contest, while North Central's defense also tallied 14.

The Lady Reds held an advantage in nearly every statistical category in the second half that included shots (19-15), shots on goal (14-12), ground balls (14-12) and free position shots (11-6). Carthage nearly evened the shot total as North Central held a slight 31-30 edge for the game. The Lady Reds also trailed North Central in ground balls by the same 31-30 margin.

Jessie Gibson led the Lady Reds offense with five goals on 10 shots, while Margaux Giacotto followed with a three-goal game. Gibson also notched a team-high three draw controls along with a pair of caused turnovers.

Lady Reds goalie Amy Sorge made nine saves in the complete-game effort, while her counterpart Camille Seghesio notched 10 saves in the complete-game outing for North Central.

The Lady Reds fall to 4-6, 1-1 CCIW while North Central ups their record to 11-2, 3-1 CCIW.

Carthage found themselves in a 6-1 hole at the 1:28 mark of the first half, but outscored North Central 8-7 from that point forward. A pair of goals from Gibson, and one from Bowman helped the Lady Reds cut their deficit to three goals at 8-5 and 9-6 before North Central responded with a 4-0 run en route to a 13-6 lead with 10:19 left in the second.

The Lady Reds outshot North Central 10-1 from that point through the game's conclusion, where Giacotto's two goals engineered Carthage's 3-0 run to end the game that cut the score to 13-9.

Carthage will take on Illinois Wesleyan University at Art Keller Field on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m.
