NOTRE DAME, IND.—The Carthage College women's lacrosse team continued their road-heavy schedule with a Wednesday-night bout at St. Mary's College (Ind.). The Lady Reds set the tone with a 1-0 edge, but couldn't find more to go for them in a 21-10 loss to the Belles. Carthage returned to competition after a 17-day layoff.
Maddie Berni and
Nicole Bowman each notched a hat trick for the Lady Reds offense, while
Emily Lima paced the team with a game-high six caused turnovers. Gibson was all over the stat sheet for Carthage again with a team-high four points, and a game-high 11 draw controls.
Margaux Giacotto also posted a four-point effort with one goal and three assists.
The Belles outshot Carthage 32-20, thanks to Erin Doyle's game-high seven goals and nine points. Lady Reds goalie
Amy Sorge did her best to tame Doyle as she notched seven saves in the losing-effort. St. Mary's (Ind.) goalie Emily Kraker tallied six saves in the complete-game victory.
The Lady Reds fall to 3-5, 0-0 CCIW on the season while St. Mary's (Ind.) improves to 4-4.
St. Mary's (Ind.) 21, Lady Reds 10
Carthage was the victim of 20 first-half turnovers, which helped power St. Mary's to a 10-3 lead with 11:44 left in the first half. The Lady Reds weathered the storm over the next couple of minutes as a pair of Gibson goals narrowed the Belles' lead to 10-5 with 8:28 remaining in the frame. Unfortunately, the Lady Reds mustered just two more shots in the first half as the Belles went on a 5-0 run to close the half en route to a 15-5 lead.
Carthage settled down in the second half as they had the upper-hand in draw controls (7-4), and battled the Belles to a 10-10 margin in shots in the frame. Bowman notched all three of her goals for Carthage in the second half, but the Belles' first-half lead was too much to overcome in a 21-10 loss.
The Lady Reds will open CCIW play at University of Dubuque on Saturday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m.
