CHICAGO, ILL.—The Carthage College women's basketball team continued their stretch run with a Saturday-night bout at North Park University. The Vikings led for most of the game, but an
Autumn Kalis layup with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter gave Carthage the lead for good at 49-48, and sparked a 16-3 Lady Reds run to close the game en route to a 63-51 victory.
Three Lady Reds finished in double figures, led by
Bailey Gilbert's 15 points and seven rebounds.
Maggie Berigan narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds along with four blocks.
Autumn Kalis netted 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting to round out the Lady Reds in double-figures while
Haley Ahr led Carthage on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Carthage snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 15-8, 9-5 CCIW while North Park fell to 8-15, 4-10 CCIW.
Lady Reds 63, North Park 51
North Park led from start-to-finish in the first quarter, where their 8-2 lead with 6:58 left was their largest in the frame. The Lady Reds closed the frame with an 8-3 run, where four different players contributed points to cut their deficit to 11-10 heading into the second.
Carthage took a brief 12-11 lead with 9:06 left in the second off Gilbert's layup, but that sparked North Park's 13-2 run that gave them their largest edge of the game at 24-14 with 5:00 remaining in the second. Berigan and Kalis each netted five points in the Lady Reds' 10-1 run to close the half to cut their deficit to 25-24.
The late halftime surge didn't help the Lady Reds as North Park regained a 10-point cushion with 1:02 left in the third and took a 44-37 lead into the fourth. Woodward sparked the Lady Reds' fourth quarter with nine points, which included a three-point basket at the 6:32 mark of the fourth that cut Carthage's deficit to one point at 48-47. The Lady Reds went on to tally a 16-3 run from that point forward, where they gained their largest lead of the game at 63-51, where things went final.
Carthage will return to action on Wednesday, February 13 at Carroll University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
