MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Carthage College women's lacrosse team opened the front-end of a two-game Minnesota swing on Saturday, where they faced Hamline University at the Augsburg University Field. The Lady Reds received goal scoring from three freshmen and held a 27-26 advantage in shots, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities in an 11-5 loss to the Pipers.
Freshmen
Margaux Giacotto,
Hanna Holloway and
Maddie Berni (2) accounted for four-of-five Carthage goals on the night.
Nicole Bowman also tallied a goal for the Lady Reds' offense. Giacotto was all over the scoresheet as she paced the Lady Reds with eight shots and six ground balls while tying for the team-lead with five caused turnovers and three draw controls. Reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week
Emily Lima chipped in five caused turnovers for the Carthage defense.
The Lady Reds also had an upper-hand in ground balls (23-22) and draw controls (10-8). Goalkeeper
Amy Sorge made eight saves in the complete-game loss for Carthage, who fall to 1-2 in 2019 while Hamline kick-off their season 1-0.
Hamline 11, Lady Reds 5
Carthage jumped to a 2-1 lead courtesy of goals from Bowman and Berni with 28:14 left in the first, their peak moment of the contest. The Pipers responded with a 5-1 run and touched Carthage for 14 shots the remainder of the first half en route to a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Reds outshot Hamline 14-11 in the second half, but only had two goals to show for it. Hamline converted on five second-half goals on 11 shots to secure an 11-5 win over Carthage.
The Lady Reds will face Augsburg University on Sunday, February 24 at 4:00 p.m.
