Fast Start Propels Carthage Over Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. — The Carthage College women's basketball team picked up their first conference win with a 66-49 game over Elmhurst Wednesday night at R.A. Faganel Hall.

While the home team would score first to start the game, the Lady Reds (4-3, 1-0 CCIW) would respond with a layup by Haley Ahr and three-pointer by Autumn Kalis. After the Bluejays (3-4, 0-1 CCIW) scored once more to make it 5-4, Carthage jumped out to a commanding lead by scoring 14 unanswered points. The Lady Reds held a 21-5 advantage after the first quarter of play.

Carthage continued to extend their lead with an 8-0 run to begin the second period, eventually sitting out in front 41-19 at the halftime buzzer.

Maggie Berigan would strike first in the second half, with Carthage taking a 52-36 advantage after Sammie Woodward sunk a three-pointer to end the third period. The Lady Reds would hold their lead through the final 10 minutes of play, going on to win by 17 points.

Carthage will remain on the road and continue conference play next, as they travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, December 7.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We really got off to a good start on both ends of the floor, and I'm proud of our efforts to get control of things on the road early. Our defense wasn't as sharp in the second half, and Elmhurst got their offense going. We were able to execute in the fourth quarter and close things out. Road wins in the CCIW are always challenging."
