Lady Reds Fall Short in Tight Game at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — After overcoming a 10-point deficit in the first quarter, the Carthage College women's basketball team was unable to take down Illinois Wesleyan Saturday night at the Shirk Center Arena, falling by a final score of 62-61.

After the home team was first on the scoreboard, Madie Kaelber connected from deep to make it a 3-2 game in favor of the Lady Reds (4-4, 1-1 CCIW). However, the Titans (7-2, 2-0 CCIW) would go out in front by as much as 12, taking a 20-10 lead over Carthage into the second quarter.

The Lady Reds began to chip away at the deficit, with Autumn Kalis sinking a three to make it 23-16 early in the period. A score from Amanda Larson just before halftime would set the score at 31-26 as the two teams took to the lockers.

While the Titans opened up the second half with a three-pointer, Carthage would slowly climb back, with another shot from three by Sammie Woodward making it a 36-33 game with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. Scores from both Maggie Berigan and Haley Ahr at the end of the period set the scoreboard to 43-41 as the two teams went to the fourth.

Jumpers from Kalis and Woodward to begin the quarter gave Carthage their first lead since early in the game, as they went out in front by nine with just over four minutes left. However, a run from Illinois Wesleyan would eventually make it a 57-56 game in favor of the home team. The two teams traded baskets as time wound down, with the Titans coming away with the victory on a late jumper.

The Lady Reds will be back on the court next weekend, when they travel to the University of Chicago on Sunday, December 15 for a 3 p.m. game.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"You have to have some resilience, it doesn't always go your way, whether it's a call or missed shot, you just have to play through it. I thought we did well after taking a hit early in the game, we got into a position to win against a good team on the road. I was really proud of our fight today, we're on the way up. We've played really well the past two games, and we have to keep going from there. The Next one is the University of Chicago, then we go to Nashville, but I think we have a little momentum at the moment."
