Strong Fourth Quarter Gives Carthage 58-51 Win Over Nazareth

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An 18-0 run to begin the final quarter helped guide the Carthage College women's basketball team 58-51 over Nazareth College Sunday night at the Basketball Destinations Music City Classic.

Carthage (5-5) was first on the board after a layup from Kelsey Coshun, and would respond to a triple by Nazareth (6-3) with one of their own from Sammie Woodward. After the Lady Reds climbed out in front by five, 12-7 with just over four minutes on the clock, the Golden Flyers would reclaim the lead by the end of the quarter by a score of 17-14.

Coshun began the scoring yet again in the next period with a score, later knocking down a pair of free throws to make it 18-17. Autumn Kalis later tied the game at 22 with 5:31 left in the half, with the Lady Reds eventually taking a 29-25 advantage into the lockers at halftime.

The two teams would trade scores to open the third quarter, later reaching a tie at 33 with 5:30 left in the period. The even score would hold as the clock reached zero, with Carthage and Nazareth heading to the final quarter in a 40-40 draw.

In the fourth, the Lady Reds would go on an 18-0 run, holding the Golden Flyers to 0-11 shooting through the first eight minutes. Their incredible run would give Carthage a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game, eventually winning 58-51.

The Lady Reds will be back in action at the Basketball Destinations Music City Classic tomorrow, facing Adrian at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We got them to miss a few shots early in the game. In the fourth quarter, I was really happy with the kids because I thought we did what we needed to do to win. We forced them to take shots they were not comfortable with, and we were able to contest some as well. We have to control the game, and we're trying to find out how to do that. Kelsey did a nice job, and Lauren did a great job too. There's a difference between guarding people and just trying to make them miss, and I think we did a good job on having an impact on them to miss some shots."
