Kalis Hits 1,000 Career Points in Lady Reds Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Carthage College women's basketball team collected a 41-32 victory over Adrian Monday afternoon to close out the Basketball Destinations Music City Classic.

The Lady Reds (6-5) started with a 11-4 run over the Bulldogs (5-5) sparked by two three pointers from Autumn Kalis. Carthage held a 15-9 advantage going into the second quarter.

Adrian cut the margin to two with 7:01 to play in the second quarter. A three pointer from Sammie Woodward extended the lead to 22-15 with 4:20 left until halftime. The Lady Reds only allowed two points over the last four minutes of play and held a 22-17 margin into halftime.

Carthage extended their lead to nine with a pair of free throws from Kelsey Coshun in the third at 26-18. The Bulldogs put together a 7-0 run cutting the Lady Reds lead to one with 1:58 remaining in the third before taking a 27-25 score into the final quarter of play.

Kalis started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer which pushed the lead back to five at 30-25. A jumper for Woodward made it 35-27 with 2:28 left in regulation before Adrian made a run to cut the deficit to five with 53 seconds remaining. Carthage went 6-of-6 from the free throw line to close out the 41-32 victory.

Next up, the Lady Reds return home facing Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, January 4 in a doubleheader with the Carthage College men's basketball team; women tip-off at 5 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We were way tougher on the defensive end than we were on the offensive end. We dug out some tough defensive rebounds on the day. We knew they were a good three point shooting team and we did a great job taking all their three point shooting away. It was a struggle, got to give Adrian a lot of credit, they didn't make it very easy but we were able to make enough plays and defensive plays to keep the game at an arm's length. "
