Lady Reds Fall in Close Game with Calvin 71-68

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their season opener, the Carthage College women's basketball team dropped a tight matchup with Calvin 71-68 Saturday afternoon in Tarble Arena.

While the Lady Reds (0-1) struck first on a layup by Autumn Kalis, the Knights (1-0) would score 10 unanswered points. With a pair of free throws near the end of the quarter by Haley Ahr, the visitors would enter the second with a 16-8 lead.

Carthage would drop 11-straight points on Calvin to open the second quarter, which was capped off by a three from Kalis to make it 19-16. A jumper from Sammie Woodward at the buzzer made it a 28-24 game entering the halftime break.

The two teams traded leads back-and-forth in the third quarter, with the visitors heading into the fourth up by one after Woodward connected from three to make it 46-45.  After Ahr added two for the Lady Reds, the Knights hit a three to take a lead they would hold for the remainder of the period. Trailing by three with the final seconds ticking down, Carthage was unable to hit the long shot, falling by a score of 71-68.

Up next, the Lady Reds host Fontbonne University on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in Tarble Arena.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"It was a game with plenty of peaks and valleys, which I guess you might see in a first game. Our start wasn't ideal, but we battled back to take a lead at halftime. The start of the third quarter gave Calvin momentum and we just couldn't get back over the hump. We lost a one-possession game where we took 21 more shots than our opponent, and we needed to finish more of our two-point shots. I guess it came down to Calvin making 12 threes at 50%, and Timmer still scored 20 points. We didn't take away the inside or the outside well enough against a good basketball team."
