Four Lady Reds Score in Double Figures as Carthage Tops Fontbonne 71-64

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team defeated Fontbonne University 71-64 to pick up their first win of the season on Thursday night in Tarble Arena.

While the Lady Reds (1-1) struck first with a bucket from Madie Kaelber, the Griffins (1-1) would respond and claim the lead. After Kaelber made it an 8-7 game in favor of the home team, scoring her 1,000th career point in the process, Fontbonne stepped back out in front and would hold the lead at the end of the first quarter 16-14.

It was a back-and-forth second quarter that saw four lead changes, with the visitors entering the locker room at the half up by one, 31-30 on Carthage.

After more of the same to start the third quarter, a layup by Autumn Kalis made it 41-all with two minutes remaining in the period. A jumper by Kaelber set the score at 43-41 in favor of the Lady Reds as the two teams went to the final 10 minutes of play.

A three-pointer by Sammie Woodward a minute into the fourth quarter would give the home team the lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the contest. After stepping out in front by as much as 14 points, Carthage would go on to win by a final score of 71-64.

The Lady Reds will play in their first road game of the season up next, as they travel to Cornell College on Saturday, November 16 for a 4 p.m. game.

  • The senior ended the evening with 19, giving her 1,014 points as she became the 24th member of the 1,000-point club at Carthage.
  • With 11 points and 12 rebounds tonight, Haley Ahr recorded her first double-double of her Carthge career.
  • Sammie Woodward played all 40 minutes tonight, finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
