Offense Guides Lady Reds Over Wisconsin-Stevens Point 73-47

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's basketball team never trailed against the Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, picking up a 73-47 victory on Tuesday at Tarble Arena.

The Lady Reds (3-3) were first to score tonight, as Haley Ahr rebounded a missed shot and laid it in down low. Carthage would score on their first seven offensive possessions, taking a 15-3 lead and forcing a Wisconsin-Stevens Point (3-3) timeout in the process. The visitors would convert a layup and free throw at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Reds took a 21-11 advantage into the second period.

Carthage struck first again in the quarter as Madie Kaelber drained a three-pointer. With just under five minutes left on the clock, Sammie Woodward kept the lead at double digits with a layup to make it 26-16. As the quarter wound down, Maggie Berigan grabbed an offensive rebound and found Kaelber on the outside for three. With seconds remaining in the half, the Lady Reds flew down the court, as Woodward drained a shot from beyond the arc as the buzzer went off to make it 35-21 at the break.

To begin scoring in the third quarter, Kaelber converted an and-one opportunity. Three-pointers by Kaelber and Woodward would give Carthage a 20-point lead, 46-26, with close to four minutes left in the period. The Lady Reds would take a 53-31 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.

Carthage continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter, going out in front by as much as 29 before claiming the victory 73-47.

The Lady Reds will take a short break and return to action on Wednesday, December 4, when they travel to Elmhurst for a 7 p.m. game.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"This was just a good all-around game from us. We were able to change our lineup around a little bit because of their size. We try to spread people out offensively, but this time we had to work the perimeter a bit more. They ended up turning the ball over 15 times, and it felt like they were scrambling with the ball. The way we've been playing, this was a good one. Hopefully this is a bit of a springboard to where we can jump ahead and get ready for Elmhurst."
