Lady Reds Take Down Lake Forest 75-59

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Carthage women's basketball team never trailed as they held off Lake Forest with a 75-59 victory Wednesday night at the Lake Forest Sports and Recreation Center.

The Lady Reds (2-2) jumped out to a quick lead with a bucket from Autumn Kalis before Madie Kaelber hit a three-pointer to make it 5-0. A layup by Haley Ahr midway through the first quarter gave Carthage a double-digit lead, with the Lady Reds eventually carrying a 23-15 advantage into the second period.

A pair of free throws by Sammie Woodward would eventually give Carthage a 12-point lead over the Foresters (2-3) with seven minutes left in the half. However, the home team would cut it down to six, as the Lady Reds went into the halftime break leading 36-30.

After Lake Forest came within five on a jumper just three minutes into the second half, Carthage began to pull away, with a score from beyond the arc and layup by Kaelber setting the score at 58-44. It was all Lady Reds in the final 10 minutes of play, as Woodward gave them their largest lead of the game on a score to make it 64-44. Carthage would go on to defeat the Foresters by a final score of 75-59

The Lady Reds will play in their third-straight road game next, as they travel to Ripon College for a matchup on Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We were a bit down after the first three games and felt we didn't play as well as we could have, so to get off to the start we did tonight was great. Lake Forest came in averaging 16 to 17 offensive rebounds per game and we held them to eight, we did a nice job containing them for the most part. When you can take the shots you want, that's a good thing, and we were able to do that tonight without turning the ball over. It was good to see we were balanced tonight, and whenever you see 14 for 14 on free throws as a coach, you're happy. Lake Forest's tempo is to get the ball to the basket and break you down. They're a great team and they're going to do well this year, so this is a nice road win for us."
