Carthage Drops Season Finale Against Augustana 51-36

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their final game of the 2019 season, the Carthage College football team fell to Augustana 51-36 Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field.

The Red Men (4-6, 4-5 CCIW) were first to strike, converting a 36-yard field goal on their second drive of the game, with the Vikings (6-4, 5-4 CCIW) responding with three of their own on the following drive. As the clock hit zero at the end of the first quarter, Colton Klein found Jovone Stricker for a 12-yard touchdown to put Carthage up 9-6.

The visiting team would respond with 21-unanswered in the second period however, setting the halftime score at 27-9 in favor of Augustana.

On their first offensive series of the third quarter, the Red Men found the end zone after yet another connection between Klein and Stricker. After a field goal by the Vikings, Carthage came back with another touchdown to make it 30-22 with just over three minutes left before the fourth period.

In the final quarter, Augustana would push their lead to 51-29 with just over five minutes remaining, with the Red Men returning a kickoff for a score to set the final score at 51-36.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"Their running game hurt us. We had three freshmen starting against five seniors up front, it was going to be a tough day. We've got some great talent and a lot of guys returning. Klein is a tough, tough kid, he laid it all on the line. For him to go out there returning from an injury and play the way he did, he's a tough kid."

"Everyone (on our roster) comes back for the most part. I'm excited about where we're headed, I think we're going to do a lot of great things in the future. We have to bring in some more talent in order to provide some depth, we know guys get banged up so it'll be nice to get some guys in there to contribute. I think we're headed in the right direction. I like the way our team has transformed in terms of work ethic and discipline."
