Carthage Women’s Basketball Falls at Cornell 58-47

MT. VERNON, Iowa. — Playing in their first road game of the season, the Carthage College women's basketball team dropped a 58-47 contest at Cornell College Saturday afternoon in the Richard and Norma Small Multi-Sport Center.

The home team jumped on the board first, but Maggie Berigan tied the game at two with a layup down low. The Rams (2-0) would climb out to a 13-5 lead, before the Lady Reds (1-2) scored a last-second bucket at the end of the first quarter to make it 15-11 in favor of Cornell.

The Rams extended their lead on Carthage through the second quarter, as the Lady Reds would enter the halftime break trailing 28-22.

In the third, Cornell stepped out in front by as much as 14, before a trio of threes from Autumn Kalis helped cut into the deficit, as Carthage trailed by five entering the final 10 minutes of play. However, the home team would maintain their lead through the fourth quarter, eventually winning by a score of 58-47.

The Lady Reds will remain on the road for their next matchup, as they head to Lake Forest next Wednesday, November 20 for a 7 p.m. game.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"I thought we played better defensively today but couldn't consistently make enough shots to win the game. We've got talented kids, but we just haven't found our stride yet. When you aren't scoring like we did today, every defensive possession has that much more importance. We had a few breakdowns at the wrong time, and ended up paying for it. The game is honest, if you don't do the right things, you find out in the results."

Quick Facts

  • Autumn Kalis connected on seven shots from beyond the arc today, one short of the school record for most in a game.
  • The senior added six rebounds, and a pair of assists.
  • With two blocks today, Maggie Berigan now has 108 in her career, tying her for the fifth-most in program history.
