Last-Minute Goal by Elmhurst Hands Red Men First Conference Loss

KENOSHA, Wis. — It was a tight contest for the first 86 minutes of play until the visitors were able to break the tie, with the Carthage College men's soccer team falling 1-0 to Elmhurst Saturday night at Art Keller Field.

Neither team was able to break through the other's defense in the first half as the two teams would enter the locker room in a 0-0 stalemate. Despite tough defensive play from the Red Men (6-6, 1-1 CCIW) during most of the second period, the Bluejays (8-4-1, 2-0 CCIW) would sneak one in on a header that barely bounced in behind the Carthage keeper with just over three minutes remaining. The visitors would hold on to hand the Red Men their first conference loss of the 2019 season.

Carthage will look to get back on track next week when they host a tough North Park team on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"When you play with fire, you are bound to get burned. Today you could point to a host of reasons we didn't get a result, but the main reason is Elmhurst just wanted it more. That's the only way you can frame it."

"Once the weather calmed down we were really pouring on mountains of pressure, but couldn't get anything to fall in the final third. It was one of those days where if you get one, you feel like you will get a handful. We just left too many goals out there."

"This one does hurt because we almost made it through a period where we are really beat up and have been getting results. It's a cruel sport sometimes, but we will move on as always. Sometimes in a loss you forget the contributions of players who had exceptional games. Niko, Ivan, and Jeff Montemayor were steady all day."

Quick Facts

  • Tonight's loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Red Men.
  • Despite the 1-0 loss, Carthage still leads in the all-time series with Elmhurst with a record of 11-7-1.
  • With a tough shot bouncing in behind him in the 86th minute, Niko Mavrogiannis had gone 266 minutes without conceding a goal.
