Despite Thrilling Overtime, Carthage and Wheaton Draw 2-2

WHEATON, Ill. — The Red Men responded twice to even the score, but after two intense overtime periods the Carthage College men's soccer team tied with Wheaton 2-2 at Joe Bean Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Red Men (8-9-2, 3-3-1 CCIW) came out attacking, getting four early shots off, two on goal, but were unable to break through with a score. However, the Thunder (10-4-3, 3-2-2 CCIW) would score first just over 13 minutes into the match after drawing a penalty kick. Minutes later, Ivan Esquivel assisted Danny Eloyza on a shot that snuck into the bottom right corner to even the match at one.

As the end of the first half neared, Wheaton regained the lead to take a 2-1 lead they would hold into the break.

Midway through the second period, Eloyza lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out, nailing it from distance to once again set the scoreboard equal, this time at 2-2 with just over 15 minutes left.

Neither team could edge out the other in regulation, as the two conference foes went to extra time. The first 10 minutes of overtime saw numerous shots from the home team, but Niko Mavrogiannis and the Carthage defense came up strong on each occasion.

In the second extra period, the intensity increased as each team came out firing on back-and-forth offensive runs. With just under two minutes left, Mavrogiannis came up with a huge kick-save on an open Wheaton shot. Moments later on a Red Men counter, Costa got a touch on an airborne ball just in front of the goal, but the Thunder keeper was there to grab it. A close header with 29 seconds left from Carthage would also come up empty as the buzzer would sound with the board set at two-all.

The Red Men return home for their final regular season match, and Senior Day, on Saturday, November 2 when they host Augustana at Art Keller Field at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"It's interesting, the better the team we play the better we play. I wish we could start our season now as we are starting to get healthy and play attacking soccer; minus the weather this time of year. With a win today we controlled our destiny, but now we have to win and get help."

"Danny Eloyza, Kevin Reilly and Matteo Costa were dynamite tonight, near unstoppable. We just didn't put away any of our point blank chances. Wheaton is a tough beat at their home and you can see why they are ranked so high in the NCAA region. We have had great results against ranked opponents in our part of the country, the question has been the games in between."

"I am proud of our guys, they left it out there. They will be playing the last Saturday with a chance to keep playing. A cornerstone of our program the last 17 years."
