Carthage Drops Season Finale in Double Overtime

KENOSHA, Wis. — While each team scored an early goal, the Carthage College men's soccer team was unable to find the game-winner in extra time, as Augustana defeated the Red Men with a late goal for a 2-1 win Saturday night at Art Keller Field.

The visitors jumped on the board with a goal in the second minute of the game. Minutes later, Jerry Patino came up and connected on a ball off of a corner kick, sneaking the ball past the keeper for the Red Men (8-10-2, 3-4-1, CCIW) to even the board at one.

After a scoreless remainder of the first half, and the entire second period, the two teams went to overtime. Neither was able to break the draw in the first 10 minutes of extra play, however, as the clock neared zero in the second overtime period, Augustana (6-7-2, 3-4-1 CCIW) connected on a goal.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"It's been a long, long time since we have ended the season on the last regular season date. Clearly learning the results around the league, knowing we didn't have a chance at the postseason, and all right before the contest, really just took the wind out of our sails. We had a ton stacked against us this year and that was the knockout blow. We were really playing with great intensity in the last four games, but with senior night and the emotions of lost opportunity, came a pretty pedestrian-like match."

"Today, we book-ended some gifts during the opening minutes and the final minute. Stunning, but reflective of the year. It was really nice to play all our seniors some significant minutes, and highlight another fantastic block of Carthage soccer history. These kids have done so much on and off the field, and quietly plowed through some great teams while softening to others. It can be a cruel sport. The 400th win will have to wait until next year, I really wanted this group to own it, but it just gives us another reason to start thinking about the future and working immediately."
