Red Men Come Out on Top at Millikin 1-0

DECATUR, Ill. — The Carthage College men's soccer team picked up their eighth win of the season Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Millikin at Frank M. Lindsay Field.

It was a scoreless start to the rain-heavy match, with the Red Men (8-9-1, 3-3 CCIW) getting their best opportunity late in the first period. A pair of unsuccessful shots led to a corner for Carthage just over 30 minutes in, with Ivan Esquivel attempting his second shot of the push from the Red Men minutes later. However, the two teams would enter the break tied at zero.

Minutes into the second half, Matteo Costa and Danny Eloyza assisted Esquivel's third attempt, which this time broke past the Millikin (5-8-1, 1-5 CCIW) goalkeeper to put them up 1-0. The Carthage defense would hold the home team to just three shots for the remainder of the match, with keeper Niko Mavrogiannis saving two of them.

The Red Men will play in their final road game of the regular season next Wednesday, when they travel to take on Wheaton on October 30 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Not sure what happened today was technically soccer, closer to rugby with the weather and elements. For a possession-oriented team, the conditions worked against us. Despite some pressing here down the stretch, the boys have risen to the occasion. I have put them through a grind of a schedule this year, some folks wrote them off, but they certainly believe. It's all you can really ask for as a coach."

"We fell asleep in a few moments today, and Niko made a couple needed saves; which really ignited our offense knowing he was having a good game. This is especially true for us as we have been gifting teams goals at unique times in matches. Tremendous effort goal by Ivan, a left-to-right goal created by Matteo and Danny. They stuck to the plan."

Quick Facts

  • Ivan Esquivel recorded his fourth goal of the season in the second half.
  • The senior now has four goals and five assists this year, giving him 13 points which ranks second on the team behind Jerry Patino's 14.
  • After recording his fourth assist this season, Danny Eloyza is now second on the team in that category, trailing only Esquivel.
  • Niko Mavrogiannis collected six saves today, matching his season best.
