Carthage Drops Road Game at No. 7 North Central

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Unable to bounce back from an early deficit to one of the top teams in the country, the Carthage College football team fell to No. 7 North Central 49-6 on Saturday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The home team would score on three of their four first-quarter drives to begin the game, as the Red Men (3-4, 3-3 CCIW) were kept off the scoreboard in the first 15 minutes of play.  The seventh-ranked Cardinals (6-1, 5-1 CCIW) would extend their lead in the second quarter, as Carthage entered the halftime break trailing 49-0.

The Red Men defense would hold North Central in check all through the second half, keeping them out of the end zone and adding a touchdown of their own midway through the fourth. On a rush by the home team, Steven Shipp came in and forced a fumble, with freshman Jake Tomczak taking the loose ball 45 yards to the house to set the board to its final score of 49-6.

After a pair of road games, Carthage will return home next weekend and host North Park for Family Weekend on Saturday, November 2 at Art Keller Field at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"Our guys didn't give up, they fought hard from start to finish, and that was what we wanted them to do. We were pretty beat up on both sides of the ball coming in, and I think that showed today. We missed a lot of tackles today, credit to Greenfield who broke some of those arm tackles."

"We did some good things on offense, we had a great plan coming in, but it always comes down to execution and they executed better than we did. I don't think our kids are going to be down, they know it's a process and it's never about one play, or one game. It's about the things we do day in and day out. This is still a young team, and we have to continue to grow them up on the field, in their daily habits and in the weight room."

Quick Facts

  • Kevin O'Boyle led the Red Men on defense today with 10 total tackles, his second-straight double-digit tackle performance and third on the season.

  • With 1.5 tackles for a loss today, O'Boyle has seven across seven games this year.
