Carthage Draws with No. 3 Chicago 1-1

CHICAGO — The Carthage College men's soccer team drew even with a tough No. 3 Chicago opponent on the road 1-1 Wednesday night at the Stagg Field Complex.

Neither team would let up in the first half, as multiple shot attempts from the Red Men (7-9-1) near the end of the period couldn't get by the Maroons (8-1-5) goalkeeper. After halftime, the home team countered a Carthage attack in the 66th minute, scoring to take a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Jerry Patino gathered the ball off of a Chicago defender, taking a shot from 25 yards out and sending a rocket into the top-left corner. Flying by the outstretched arms of the keeper, Patino's seventh goal of the season drew the match even.

While the two teams would trade close chances as regulation ended, an additional 20 minutes of play wasn't enough to determine a winner, as the Red Men drew their first tie of the season.

Carthge will return to conference play this weekend when they travel to Decatur, Ill. to face Millikin on Saturday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"We really have been a tale of two teams this year. When we play the top teams in America, we really match that energy well and play attractive soccer. However, when we look past teams we get something different. This whole year has been a delicate balance between grooming younger players, and figuring out a way to balance this with the seniors. As much as we have been up and down, I love our team. Great kids, and it's been fun to watch them do extraordinary things, like Jerry's goal."

Quick Facts

  • Patino's goal gives him seven on the season, which ties his career mark he set last year as a junior.
  • The Oak Lawn, Ill. native leads the team in goals and total points, with 14.
  • Freshman keeper Christian Lekki tied his career-best with eight saves today, a mark he's hit three times this year.
