Carthage Wins Overtime Thriller Over Lake Forest 3-2

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Regulation wasn't enough to decide the Carthage College men's soccer match with Lake Forest, but the Red Men came out on top 3-2 on a game-winner from Nicholas Messineo in the second overtime period Wednesday night at Art Keller Field.

It was a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes with solid defensive play preventing each team from getting a shot on goal. In the 12th minute however, the Foresters (4-6-1) broke through with a shot that snuck in off the left post. The Red Men (6-5) had a close call on a pair of shots in the box moments later, but would enter the half trailing 1-0.

Each team's defensive units would prevent the other from getting a good look early in the second half, but Matteo Costa dribbled his way through a few defenders before sending a rocket off of his left foot that snuck under the crossbar. Later in the 77th minute, Jeff Montemayor tossed a slick pass back to Desmond Dean who scored to give Carthage a 2-1 lead. However, the visitors would find an equalizer with minutes left on the clock, converting a penalty on a Carthage red card to force overtime.

At the end of the first 10-minute period, the Red Men nearly ended the match after a header just missed its target as the final seconds rolled down. It didn't take long for the home team to get another chance as Carthage countered a Forester free kick, with Ivan Esquivel passing to Nicholas Messineo who found the back of the net for the game winner.

The Red Men will return to conference play, hosting their first home College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match, as Elmhurst comes to Art Keller Field this Saturday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Today had a little bit of everything really, rain, a slow start, gifted a goal to a deficit, a halftime with effective adjustments, a shot of energy, and a comeback. Frankly, it should have all been said and done, but we retaliated after taking a shot late in the game that yielded a penalty kick, and now here we go!"

"Lake Forest is a really solid team and wanted a result, you could feel it, so credit to their first half. I am glad the game became so competitive, especially with us resting a few injured players."

"Lekki bailed us out on a couple of give-away's, Matteo came up big when he was struggling to find space, Jeff Montemayor and Desmond Dean's combo play was brilliant, and Nick Messineo stole the show with an individual effort to put it in the books."

  • Matteo Costa's goal early in the second half was the freshman's third on the season.
