Red Men Fall to Illinois Wesleyan on the Road

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest at Illinois Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Neis Soccer Field.

The home team jumped on the board early, scoring just over 10 minutes into the match. The Red Men (7-9, 2-3 CCIW) would have a chance to tie it up with a pair of corner kicks near the end of the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net, entering the break with a 1-0 deficit.

The Titans (7-7, 3-2 CCIW) would score once more at the 56-minute mark, before adding a third goal on a penalty moments later.

Carthage will stay on the road for their next match and head to the University of Chicago for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, October 23.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"The game was decided in the first 20 minutes today. We didn't get off the bus, after a long ride, and Illinois Wesleyan ran at us with more pace, and energy. They deserved to win."

"It's tough because we can play with the best teams in the country, and then we can do this. Everyone is bringing their best game at us and we are struggling on occasions to match that situation. Sometimes you lose in sport, but the manner in which we surrendered was hard to witness. Whether you point to a poor surface, injury or ability, today we didn't answer the starting bell."

"One positive is we were able to share some minutes, get some experience, and still battled to the last whistle. I have to do a better job too."

Quick Facts

  • Goalkeeper Niko Mavrogiannis recorded five saves today, the second-most in a single game for the senior this season.
  • Jerry Patino recorded his 12th shot on goal of the season today, which now leads the team.
