Carthage Drops 2-1 Match with North Central

KENOSHA, Wis. — Returning to conference play, the Carthage College men's soccer team fell short in a tough match with North Central 2-1 Wednesday night at Art Keller Field.

The Red Men (7-8, 2-2 CCIW) jumped on the board early, with Matteo Costa booting a rebounded shot from Ivan Esquivel in to make it a 1-0 match just over six minutes in. However, the visiting Cardinals (9-4-1, 4-1 CCIW) would counter with their own to tie it at one minutes later. The score would remain 1-1 at the halftime break.

Despite holding a majority of the possession during the second half, Carthage was unable to break through with a goal, as North Central scored their second with 18 minutes left to play.

The Red Men will continue their conference schedule on the road, facing Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, October 19 at 3:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"This one hurts. We have played pretty attractive soccer the last two or three games but have not resulted. We are starting to beat ourselves more than our opponents, particularly by not scoring on our numerous chances. I like our team and our abilities, but if we don't find another gear in the final third it will be nail-biters to the end, and this is on me. We have to find ways to be even better than we are frankly."

Quick Facts

  • Ivan Esquivel notched his fifth assist of the year, tying his career-best for most in a season with the Red Men.
  • The senior now has 16 assists in his career, paired with 16 goals for 48 total points.
  • Freshman Matteo Costa scored his fourth goal of the season, and is now second on the team behind Jerry Patino's six.
