Women’s Volleyball Falls on the Road to No. 3 UChicago

CHICAGO, ILL.  — The No. 4 Carthage College women's volleyball squad was defeated for their second loss of the season by No. 3 UChicago 3-1 in non-conference action Tuesday at Ratner Center.

Carthage (20-2) jumped out to an 11-8 lead to start the match against UChicago (19-1). The Maroons rallied to tie the game at 12 before gaining control of the set with a 7-3 run to shift the score 18-15. The Lady Reds came back to tie the set at 18 until UChicago used a 7-1 run to close out the set. In the second set, Carthage controlled a 15-8 advantage. A kill from Haley Horner pushed the lead to 18-14 in favor of the Lady Reds. Back-to-back kills from Andrea Kozak gave Carthage the set 25-18. It was a back-and-forth effort to start the third set with the score tied at eight. UChicago took a slim 11-9 lead off an attack error. The Lady Reds again rallied to tie the set at 16 with a kill from Shannon Kebisek and a Maroons attack error. The Maroons used a 9-2 run to go up 2-1 in the match. UChicago controlled the final set taking the match by a final score of 25-17.

Carthage returns home to face Wisconsin-Stevens Point Wednesday, October 16 starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"We were challenged tonight by a very good Chicago team. We battled each set and really served them tough in set two. We unraveled a bit in set four and clawed our way back. There was some great defense and long rallies on both side. They blocked very well and kept the pressure on us at the net. It was fun to battle a tough team. That match will push us to get better.  We are home tomorrow night against a tough UWSP team, so short memory is needed."
