Red Men Fall to Wisconsin-Platteville in Tight 1-0 Contest

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal by Wisconsin-Platteville, falling 1-0 on Friday night at Art Keller Field.

The visitors would score just over 15 minutes into the match and take their one-goal advantage into the halftime break. Early in the second period, Nicholas Messineo ripped a shot from just over 30 yards out, but the goalie would make a diving save after just getting a hand on it.

With 20 minutes left in the match, Messineo took another long shot that just missed the right post. A pair of shots by the Red Men (7-7) with just over 10 minutes left on the clock were blocked, with a shot by Ivan Esquivel narrowly missing as the final minutes ran off the clock.

Carthage will return to conference play next Wednesday when they host North central at Art Keller Field at 7:30 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"We did everything but score today, and sometimes that's the way it goes. I really should be happy, we lost by a handful last year and this year by the slimmest of margins. I would have to digest the numbers, but I'm fairly certain we owned the shots, the possession and corners in a healthy manner, but the only one that counts is the scoreboard."

"We met some goals here, rested a lot of guys, got some others on the field by script, and kept mountains of pressure on for a majority of the game. I was really proud of the way we played in the second half and in the adjustments made."

Quick Facts

  • The Red Men were able to get off 19 shots today, their second-most in a game this season.
  • Nicholas Messineo matched his career-best for shot attempts today with six.
  • Carthage only allowed one corner for the visitors, compared to 13 for the Red Men.
