MILWAUKEE—
Morgan Verbeten's goal with 0:26 left in the contest propelled the Carthage College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering in a Wednesday-night affair at Viets Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Verbeten, a freshman, was one-of-two Lady Reds to notch her first collegiate goal against the Raiders.
Â
"It was a gritty, hard-fought 3-2 win," said Lady Reds head soccer coach
Ian Wilson. "We didn't let a conceding goal early in the game get us down. We fought back and got two great goals to take the lead. We need to find ways to minimize mistakes like the one that led to their second goal. We never dropped our heads and found a way to win late in the game."
Â
Joanne Stanfa and
Malaika Bigirindavyi scored Carthage's first two goals of the contest, which dug them out of an early 1-0 hole. The Lady Reds held advantages in shots (13-7) and shots on goal (8-4) over MSOE. Freshman goalkeeper
Sara Lieffrig registered two saves in 90:00 of work for Carthage while Abbie Lorenz and Allison Lessila collectively notched five saves for the Raiders.
Â
The Lady Reds improve to 2-1, 0-0 CCIWÂ and MSOE drops to 0-3, 0-0 NACC.

Lady Reds 3, MSOE 2
Â
The Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead after Jeray Riffel launched a 40-yard lob pass from midfield down to Brooke Zidek, who controlled the ball off her knee before she fired a shot to the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Carthage responded exactly a minute later, where
Makenzie McCloud fired a blocked shot that found Stanfa's foot. Stanfa finished the rebounded shot that beat MSOE goalkeeper Lorenz to tie the game 1-1 in the 34
th minute.
Â
Carthage's successful corner-kick offense flourished again in the 39
th minute. Bigirindavyi did the honors with a header off
Jacey Kent's corner kick, which pushed Carthage's lead to 2-1. The Lady Reds have scored off a corner kick in all three games this season thanks to Bigirindavyi's first collegiate goal.Â
Â
Gabby Hoffman registered a goal for MSOE in the 79
th minute to knot the game 2-2.
Â
Verbeten's milestone goal occurred when her shot bounced off a defender, and beat MSOE goalkeeper Lessila on her left to give Carthage a 3-2 lead and eventual victory with 0:26 left on the clock.
